In 2006, there was no Democratic candidate for the House seat in Arizona's Sixth Congressional District. Rep. Jeff Flake, a Republican, was opposed only by a Libertarian candidate.
I have filed with the Federal Election Commission as a candidate for the Democratic nomination for the House seat in 2008. If no one more qualified steps forward, at least I will give the voters in AZ-06 a Democrat to vote for.
The Southeast Valley Insider column of the Arizona Republic on October 19, 2006, published this item:
Election a joke for Flake
An easy campaign for re-election turned U.S. Rep. Jeff Flake into a comedian Wednesday. During a ceremony at the Boeing Company's Mesa facility, Flake loosened the crowd up with a few jokes."It's a great day to be in Arizona in the fall, it's a great day to be Boeing, it's also a great day for a Republican not to have an opponent," Flake told the crowd."This is my first time not having an opponent, there's a write-in Libertarian, and it's great," he said. "It feels like a Cuban election. I think those Communists were onto something."Perhaps realizing his comedy might not appeal to everybody, Flake asked, "There's no press here, right?"
